Many trainee counsellors find that securing a placement takes longer than expected. Understanding why can help you approach the search more realistically.
Why placements can be hard to find: - There is no single national counselling placement system — each organisation manages its own recruitment independently, with different eligibility criteria, induction procedures and timing. - Placement providers have responsibility for client safety. They must carefully assess whether trainees are ready to work with their specific client group. - Supervision limits how many trainees an organisation can support at once — every supervised placement requires qualified supervisor capacity. - Some placements require previous experience, particularly those working with complex or high-risk client groups. - Location matters — rural areas and some regions have fewer providers, and competition in cities like London is particularly high.
How to improve your chances: start searching early, apply to multiple providers simultaneously, build relevant volunteer experience, ask your tutor for local recommendations, and be flexible about the type of placement you will accept initially.
