A counselling placement interview typically lasts 30–60 minutes and may be face-to-face, online, or a combination. Interviewers want to understand not just your theoretical knowledge but your readiness to work with real clients responsibly.
Common interview questions and what they assess: - "Tell me about yourself and why you chose counselling" — your motivation and self-awareness - "Why are you applying to us specifically?" — your research and genuine interest - "How do you handle confidentiality, especially with safeguarding limits?" — your understanding of ethical boundaries - "What would you do if a client disclosed risk to themselves or others?" — safeguarding knowledge - "How do you take supervision feedback that challenges your work?" — openness to learning - "Tell me about your personal therapy" — your reflective capacity
Good questions to ask the provider: What does a typical week look like for a placement counsellor? How are clients allocated? What supervision is provided? What's the minimum hours commitment?
