UK Counselling Awarding Bodies
The main professional bodies that accredit counselling training programmes in the UK are:
BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) — The largest UK body. Most placements expect BACP standards. Diplomas require at least 100 supervised client hours, with supervision at 1 hour per 8 client hours (minimum 1.5 hrs/month).
UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) — Main body for psychotherapists. Requires at least 450 supervised clinical hours over 3–6 years part-time training.
BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) — Lead body for CBT. Requires at least 200 taught hours, 250 self-directed study hours, and 200 supervised CBT practice hours.
NCPS (National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society) — Accredited Register holder. Requires at least 100 supervised client hours, max 4 clients per week rising to 6 after 75 hours.
COSCA (Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland) — Scotland's main body. Requires at least 100 client hours, 1 hour supervision per 8 client hours.
What Placements Expect
Most placement providers will ask for:
Proof of enrolment on a recognised counselling course
Student professional indemnity insurance
An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
Clinical supervision arrangements (in-house or external)
Two references, usually including one academic reference

Supervision
Clinical supervision is a professional requirement throughout placement. BACP guidance requires a minimum of 1.5 hours of supervision per calendar month, at least fortnightly, at a ratio of 1 hour of supervision per 8 client hours. Some placements include in-house supervision; others expect trainees to source and fund external supervision independently (typically £40–£80 per hour).
Ethics and Boundaries
Good counselling placements adhere to a recognised ethical framework. BACP's Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions is the most widely used in the UK. Key areas to be aware of include: confidentiality and its limits (safeguarding), professional boundaries, record keeping, and self-care.
